On this 100th Anniversary of the Komagata Maru Incident, the GVJCCA acknowledges the bigotry of the Canadian government and society at that time that prevented the landing of over 350 Sikh passengers. History has revealed that South Asian communities, as well as other Asian communities, have made immense contributions to Canada for more than a century, despite the ongoing racism, and other hardships and challenges which faced them. Combating injustice and racism is an ongoing responsibility, and remembering the Komagata Maru Incident provides valuable lessons for our society to continue to progress beyond the inhumanity of the past while preventing it in the present and future.
On May 4th, the GVJCCA Board of Directors hosted a Community Forum with members and non-members to discuss ideas and collect feedback about the past, present and future of our organization. An excellent cross-section of participants gathered for the event, which saw approximately thirty-five to forty attendees come out on a Sunday afternoon. Many interesting ideas were presented and it was heartwarming to see the level of support everyone showed for our organization and especially for The Bulletin / Geppo. Thanks to all the attendees for sharing their ideas and thanks to those of you who took the time to share your thoughts directly with Kathy Shimizu and I, either prior to or just after the Forum. Our Board will be reviewing the feedback soon and I look forward to reporting back to the community after we have had an opportunity to discuss the feedback in detail.
In the meantime, we would also like to build on some of the discussions that were started at the Community Forum with respect to The Bulletin / Geppo. Since many spoke about the importance that the publication plays in connecting Japanese Canadians in Vancouver and across Canada, it was suggested that we hold a separate meeting to discuss just the magazine. Some attendees felt there were ways that the publication could be expanded to further strengthen and broaden community connections. Others spoke about it fulfilling a more specific role in terms of raising awareness about current and social issues, education, and advocacy, and perhaps narrowing its focus. Some thought that there could be ways in which we could achieve both goals. To follow-up on these ideas, we will be holding a meeting on Tuesday, June 17th at 6pm in the Tonari Gumi / JCCA building on 42 W. 8th Avenue. If you are interested, please join us!
The next fundraising event on our calendar is the 2nd Annual Joint Golf Tournament with Tonari Gumi. This fun-filled tournament is scheduled for June 22nd at Meadow Gardens in Pitt Meadows. I encourage you to please consider coming out or making a donation to this great event. This year’s tournament will be in support of the Tonari Gumi & JCCA “Making It a Home Fund” which has a goal of raising $250,000 to complete the funding of Tonari Gumi’s new seniors’ drop-in and community outreach centre in Vancouver. All of the main renovations to the Tonari Gumi centre have been completed and programs and services for the community have re-started, but more funds are necessary to ensure that the furnishings and facilities are in place to truly “make it a home” for our seniors and to cover the costs of the upgrades necessary to ensure the new centre is safe and accessible for everyone. There is still time to register or to become a sponsor by visiting www.tonarigumi.ca.
As some of you may know, the first NAJC Japanese Canadian Young Leaders Conference was held in Toronto last September and this year’s Conference will be held in Vancouver. The event is being spearheaded by Lisa Schoenhofer, a Director of the Ottawa Japanese Community Association, Director of the NAJC and member of the NAJC Human Rights Committee. This year’s Conference will run from September 19-21 and the GVJCCA will be helping to coordinate it in conjunction with the NAJC AGM that is also taking place that weekend. The Organizing Committee for this event has started to gather young people interested in helping determine the Conference program. If you are between the ages of 12 and 30 and are of Japanese descent, I encourage you to consider joining the Organizing Committee or at least try attending the Conference.
