東京から電車で約２時間のところにある栃木県足利市には現在でも映画『バンクーバーの朝日』の撮影された際のセットが街中の所々に残っています。本来解体され、廃棄される予定だったセットの数々ですがボランティアやエキストラで携わった人々が有志で集まり映画のロケ地であった足利市を盛り上げていきたいという思いで行われている活動をご紹介します。

In 2005, the Vancouver Asahi Team was inducted into the BC Sports Hall of Fame. Medals were made for individual players but many remain unclaimed by family members. Last year’s 100th anniversary of the first Asahi team and the film Bancuba (Vancouver) no Asahi produced by Fuji TV brought much excitement and celebration of the legendary Asahi baseball team, not only locally but in Japan and Hollywood.

It is a visually-evocative film, both stark in its contrasts and rich in its emotional detail from the claustrophobic conformist offices of Japan to the almost paralyzing vastness of the American hinterland. The symmetrical composition shots, dead-pan humour, and quirky characters give the film a Wes Anderson feel, but with a deep personal investment that forces us to wonder how far would any of us go to follow our dreams, hopes, and beliefs.

Each night’s class consisted of Yamai-san leading us in utai, chanting, for an hour or so, followed by a short break; the rest of the evening was spent on shimai, dancing.

Born in the Meiji era, he had a great “sense of the borderless,” passion for cars and a curious mind – all extraordinary for Japanese people of the time, or even of today. This I can attest to with certitude, as it turns out he was probably my father’s best friend since the time they went to the university together.

The tour will also locate remote town sites that no longer exist, including Tashme, Lemon Creek, Popoff, Slocan, Sandon and Rosebery. While they have a solemn past, several of these locations still have small but thriving Japanese Canadian communities.

In early 1942, fuelled by racism, Canada uprooted over 21,000 Japanese Canadians from their homes on the west coast. Over 8000 were detained in Hastings Park before being sent to internment sites in the BC interior or to work camps…

We are in a different era from the late 1950s, '60s and '70s decades when butoh was most strikingly and radically different from everything that was going on in Europe and North America. I think butoh now has infiltrated a lot of contemporary dance expression.
