Submerge at the Whip

ACTIVE ART GROUP EXHIBITION
Whip Restaurant Gallery, 209 E 6th Avenue (at Main Street)
The Active Art Group combines inspiring field trips to exotic Vancouver locales with subtle peer pressure to produce works of painting, photography, printmaking and other media. After an outing the group meets a few weeks later to share the results of their work. Submerge features the work of artists Alun Macanulty, Bryn Sadownik, Jane Calder, Karen Suk, Ken Tabata, Kimberley Fehr, and Helen Yagi. The Group is open to artists of all mediums, from painting to photography to printmaking, writing and more. “We’re looking for more members in any medium,” says Sadownik. “Its been very effective so far in terms of driving our members to produce, but we’d like to expand our membership base. Were always looking for new creative energy.”
The show is free and open to the public during restaurant hours. For more information about the Active Art Group, or to join, visit www.activeartgroup.org or email activeartgroup@yahoo.ca.

Superstars in their native Japan, young Tsugaru-shamisen virtuosos Ryoichiro and Kenichi Yoshida—The Yoshida Brothers—have effected nothing short of a cultural revolution with a muscular reinvention of the ancient three-stringed instrument, giving it the fiery passion of a rock ‘n’ roll guitar. Online world music portal World Music Central notes, “Clad in formal, ceremonial attire of kimonos and hakama pants, but sporting the dyed light brown hair that is trendy among Japan’s savvy youth, the Brothers play the age-old Tsugaru-shamisen—an instrument akin to a rustic three-stringed banjo—with the fervor of Jimi Hendrix.”
