1942 Japanese Canadian Internment at Hastings Park

On Sunday, April 26, 2015, over 200 people gathered at Hastings Park for the unveiling of four signs commemorating the over 8,000 Japanese Canadians detained there throughout 1942 before being sent to internment sites in the BC interior or to work camps across the country. Developed over several years by a coalition of Japanese Canadian community groups and individuals, the panels document the Livestock Building, Rollerland, The Forum and the Garden Auditorium. Following a tour of the signs, led by former Nikkei National Museum Curator Beth Carter, a reception was held at the Hastings Room. A website, hastingspark1942.ca is being developed and will be launched shortly.
