Steveston Salmon Festival

The 69th Annual Steveston Salmon Festival began under bright blue skies. The day started with the parade enjoyed by thousands along the parade route through Steveston.

A variety of events was enjoyed by all the attendees including the children’s festival, trade show, flower & garden show, stage show, vintage car show, and many more other activities.

In the kendo hall, demonstrations of the tea ceremony, bonsai and ikebana were appreciated by the hundreds of visitors who came through the hall. Later in the day, they enjoyed a wonderful koto performance.

In the judo hall, crowds enjoyed demonstrations from the judo club showing self defence technique; the Matsu-kai dojo showing their skills at iaido; the kendo club and the karate club also had their members demonstrate their respective skill sets.

In the cultural centre, there were displays from the Japanese doll making club, the kaminingyo club, as well as from Nikkei Seniors Health and Nikkei Museum. The Japanese Language School sponsored the origami classes as well as had children sized kimonos for photo opportunities.

The Japanese seniors enjoyed a fruitful day selling crafts that they had made throughout the year. All their proceeds go towards the cultural centre programs and equipment purchase.
