PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Holiday greetings from the GVJCCA I hope that you had an opportunity to read the wonderful interview by John Endo Greenaway, our Bulletin editor, with Fumio Frank Kanno because it inspired me to attend the book launch at Nikkei Place on December 1 for Nikkei Fishermen On the BC Coast: Their Biographies and Photographs. The book which was edited by Mas Fukawa is an excellent compilation of information which provides the biographies and photos of over 700, plus the names of 3680 known Nikkei fishermen who manned the thousands of fishing boats that worked the BC coast before the war and after the restrictions were lifted enabling many to return to their former livelihood. I was showing the book to my mother and she was surprised and very pleased that my grandfather’s (Suekichi Honkawa) name was included in the list of biographies. Although I knew that my grandfather was involved in the fishing industry before the war, I really didn’t know too much outside of the fact that he was involved in boat building before the war and farming post-war. Anyway, if you get an opportunity please have a look at the beautiful book or get one yourself as it may uncover some information that you may have either not known or had forgotten. If you wish to purchase this book, please contact: Henry Tanaka 604.524.9897 or Frank Kanno 604.432.6131. On Sunday January 13, the GVJCCA will be holding its annual Keiro-kai at Nikkei Place. After much discussion and debate, it was decided that we will hold our annual event for our seniors over 70 years of age at Nikkei Place this year. This will enable more to attend. As in previous years we will start things off at noon. Please call the JCCA office at 604.777.5222 or Tonari Gumi at 604.687.2172 for registration. This year’s Nikkei Community New Year’s Party (Shinnen-kai) will be held on Saturday, January 19, at Nikkei Place from 6 pm. Tickets will be available through the GVJCCA or any one of the sponsoring community groups and the NNM&HC. Just in time for Valentine’s Day, the GVJCCA will be holding a fundraising dance on Saturday, February 16th at Nikkei Place starting from 6:30pm. This will be our first dance fundraiser to help facilitate workshops and seminars during the course of the year. We hope that you will be able to attend. Tickets will be made available by mid-December and more information can be attained at 604.777.5222 or email gvjcca@shaw.ca. Have a safe and wonderful holiday season! |
