The Vancouver International Dance Festival returns to Vancouver stages March 2-23, promising another feast of cutting-edge dance featuring international, national, and local contemporary dance artists.
This year’s venues include the Roundhouse, Scotiabank Dance Centre, the Vancouver Playhouse and free, site-specific locations in Vancouver and North Vancouver.

Two highlights of this year’s Festival are the return of Black Grace and a world premiere by Canadian dance icon Margie Gillis.

New Zealand’s Black Grace (March 12-13, Vancouver Playhouse), an explosive company that fuses pacific cultures and contemporary dance in extraordinary performances fueled by explosive rhythms, energy, spirit and passion, blew audiences away in 2010. This year the company presents an evening of mixed repertoire including Pati Pati, Amata – Act 3, and Vaka.

Montreal’s Margie Gillis (March 16, Vancouver Playhouse) presents a one-night-only world premiere presentation of The Light Between, a work formed by 25 years of research and dialogue between Gillis and painter/sculptor Randal Newman.

Other performers include Vancouver’s Co.ERASGA in the Festival opener; Kitt Johnson X-act (Denmark); battery opera (Vancouver); EDAM (Vancouver); Jocelyne Montpetit Danse (Montreal); Kokoro Dance (Vancouver); Salomé Diaz & Jennifer McKinley (Vancouver); Gibson Muriva (Montreal); Anusha Fernando (Vancouver); Dancers of Damelahamid (Vancouver); T42 (Switzerland) and Raven Spirit Dance (Vancouver).

In addition to the performances at the Playhouse, Roundhouse and the Scotiabank Dance Centre, the public is invited to enjoy free site-specific performances in the community by Compaigni V’ni Dansi at the Roundhouse Plaza (2:30pm, March 9 and 23, 2013); and Kokoro Dance at the Woodwards Building Atrium, (12:30pm, March 2 and 16, 2013), Vancouver Art Gallery – Offsite (2:30pm, March 2 and 16, 2013), as well as North Vancouver’s Lonsdale Quay Market (3:00pm, March 3 and 17, 2013).

The Festival suns March 2 – Saturday, March 23, 2013
