Unveiling of the Hastings Park Signage Project

In early 1942, fuelled by racism, Canada uprooted over 21,000 Japanese Canadians from their homes on the west coast. Over 8000 were detained in Hastings Park before being sent to internment sites in the BC interior or to work camps across the country.

Please join us for the unveiling of four panels introducing the history of Japanese Canadians at Hastings Park in 1942.

The Hastings Park committee met on Thursday February 5 to review the status of the signage project. City representatives indicated the concrete mounts for three of the signs were scheduled for pouring on February 16. The signage fabricator foresees installation for the end of February/first week of March. Also Beth Carter gave an update on the Hastings Park website which is a significant and important part of the signage project. The website will provide additional historic public information, more Hastings Park stories, artistic content, as well as updates on project activities. The committee learned as well that National Nikkei Museum Curator/Director, and Hastings Park signage project manager Beth Carter is leaving the National Nikkei Museum on April 2. The committee expressed our sincere appreciation for the great working relationship we have enjoyed with Beth and is happy to learn she intends to remain involved with the signage project as a volunteer.

With information about the expected completion of signage fabrication, an open commemoration event is now scheduled for Sunday, April 26, 2015 from 1 to 3:30 PM at Hastings Park. Update information about the Hastings Park signage project will be available in the April Bulletin also. All community members are invited and welcome to attend the commemoration on April 26.
