University of British Columbia Asian Canadian and Asian Migration Studies Centennial Alumni Project

To celebrate the University of British Columbia’s upcoming centennial year, beginning this fall the Asian Canadian and Asian Migration Studies program is looking back on the university’s past 100 years in order to uncover the unknown histories of its Asian Canadian communities. “It’s About Time: UBC as a Place of Diverse Minds” is a research project that seeks to discover the names and stories of UBC’s first Asian Canadian graduates. What was attending UBC like for an Asian student before 1942? What campus clubs and activities did students of Asian heritage participate in? The stories we share will help us reflect on how UBC has changed in the last 100 years in its demographics, social attitudes, and perspectives on diversity and inclusion.

This list of Japanese Canadian students was collected based on the information found in the university’s annual yearbooks between 1916 to 1942. If details on this list need updating, we would be happy to hear from you! If you or someone you know are familiar with the names on this list and would like to share their stories and, please contact Mary and Tosh Kitagawa (heiwa@telus.net; 604.943.3195).
