Hapa-Palooza 2012

Hello, Vancouver! Are you ready to MIX IT UP? Hapa-palooza: A Celebration of Mixed Roots Arts and Ideas is back for its second year, running September 12 and 13, 2012. Hapa-Palooza is a young cultural festival that celebrates Vancouver’s identity as a place of hybridity, synergy and acceptance. This year, we are showcasing the vibrant hybrid talent in literature and film. Hapa-Palooza Festival places prominence on celebrating and stimulating awareness of mixed-roots identity, especially amongst youth.

Mixed Voices Raised
Vancouver Public Library, Central Branch, Alice MacKay Room.
Hapa-palooza Festival presents a literary panel and Q&A with the hottest BC talent exploring mixed identity in their creative work. Join VPL Chief Librarian Sandra Singh in a discussion with essayist and sound poet Wayde Compton, award-winning filmmaker, novelist and Zen priest Ruth Ozecki, and Governor General-winning illustrator and writer Julie Flett.

Hapa-palooza Festival brings back this much-loved event, curated by award-winning filmmaker, Jeff Chiba Stearns. Join us as we explore the latest media featuring multiethnic subjects and casts, with a mixed actors panel, film screenings, and Q&A with the filmmakers. Confirmed guests include filmmakers Ann Marie Fleming and Jason Karmon, actors Jennifer Spence and Kyle Toy, with screenings by Kip Fulbeck and Octavio Warnock-Graham.

Hapa-Palooza is seeking a dynamic team of spirited volunteers to help us with this year’s events. If you think you or one of your amazing friends, would like to help out, let us know by e-mailing volunteer@hapa-palooza.com – or fill out one of our Volunteer Forms at hapapalooza.ca/volunteer

The following positions are currently available:
Volunteer Coordinator: (6hrs + Festival Dates)
Help create community of volunteers for 2-day programming! Your job will be to designate and schedule volunteers to various responsibilities, and positions. Our past volunteer coordinator moved on.

Media Coordinator: (10hrs + Festival Dates)
Tell the world about us! If you are outgoing, and have marketing and media experience, this position may be for you. We are looking for an outgoing volunteer to submit press releases, manage our social media sites and let the local public know about our exciting upcoming events! This may include managing some aspects of televised and print media. Our past media coordinator moved on to positions with Public Dreams and DOXA. Festival Videographer and Festival Photographer (Festival dates and post-production) Capture the beautiful faces that make our community, and help us tell our stories!
