Kurosawa Centennial • 1910-2010
Pacific Cinematheque

Film institutes and film lovers around the world have been commemorating this year’s centennial of the birth of the great Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa. Running to mid August, Pacific Cinémathèque presents a comprehensive retrospective of Kurosawa’s films. The exhibition includes rare prints (courtesy The Japan Foundation) of Kurosawa’s early works and a number of newly struck 35mm prints and recent restorations (from Janus Films in New York) of his masterpieces and mature films.

Vancouver Sings:
10th Anniversary Choral Concert

(Scotiabank Chan Centre Series)
Chan Centre at UBC
One of the pleasures of looking back on ten years of festival programming is the discovery of certain retroactive themes. So we seized the opportunity to ask five excellent choirs to come back this year and appear together on one evening at the Chan Centre, where their particular strengths could be appreciated singly and en masse.
Elektra Womens Choir, the Laudate Singers, musica intima, the Vancouver Bach Choir and Vancouver Chamber Choir will each provide a set of signature works. To add to the mix, a top Japanese women’s choir, Brilliant Harmony, will be returning to Vancouver to perform with their Canadian counterparts. The finale will be a massed choir performance led by respected Japanese conductor Ko Matsushita. This will be a must-attend event for fans of Vancouver’s choral singers and we predict the collective energy and joy of the gathering will make Vancouver choral history!
